Volunteer Accommodation and Food
AERU volunteers live with us and the elephants on KEP, situated between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. Many staff live within the park. The property is fenced and guarded at night, it is very safe.
Volunteers are housed either in the Bunkhouse (right next to AERU offices) or the main house Annex (a short 5-minute walk from the AERU offices). Our rooms sleep 2-3 people per room with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, and shower).
Fully-equipped kitchens are available at our accommodations – including fridges, ovens, stoves, microwaves, kettles, toasters, cutlery and crockery. Our communal lounge and dining areas, and outdoor patio allows for a comfortable home for volunteers to relax after hours, with books, TV, or just cuddling with our house cat!
We do not include food in our volunteer programmes. Volunteers typically have very broad dietary requirements so weekly shopping trips allow volunteers to buy their own supplies. We take volunteers shopping on the day of their arrival, so that they can stock up for the week ahead. Our kitchens are fully equipped for volunteers to do their own cooking. Each volunteer is allocated fridge and cupboard space to store their supplies. A communal freezer is also available.
The Indlovu Café is our on-site restaurant; and is located next to the Bunkhouse. It is open daily between 08h00 and 16h30 and serves delicious burgers, pizzas, deli rolls and is famous for its treats like cakes and chocolate brownies! If you are having a lazy cooking day or just want to spoil yourself, you can order food from the restaurant during the day or arrange a dinner takeaway.
All linen is provided and changed weekly. Laundry facilities are provided for volunteers to do their own personal washing at their own cost. Towels are not provided so please bring your own along.
Responsible consumption of alcohol is permitted after work hours and in moderation. No loud parties are permitted on-site.
