Megan Carpenter Testimonial – Volunteer, April 2016 – 3 weeks

Working with animals like African elephants has always been a huge dream of mine. I have always wondered what it would be like to be face to face with these beautiful animals and it really was a dream come true for me. Before travelling to South Africa I was so nervous to travel alone and be away from home for such a long time but I now know it was the best decision I have ever made.

My first ever time meeting Sally’s herd was the most precious moment of my life. I got so emotional being so close to them and the feeling I got when they would look into my eyes was indescribable. These last few weeks I have learned so much about these amazing animals and I have enjoyed every single minute. Recording data in the field everyday has definitely been one of my highlights, just knowing that I have helped with making sure that these are the best looked after and cared for elephants in world.

The aeru team have been outstanding from start to finish and they really do make you feel part of the family. Without people like them being able to volunteer would be impossible. The guides that work alongside these elephants everyday are incredible, they put so much work and effort into the job they do and they love these elephants as much as we do. They make me feel so welcome every day and always have me laughing way too much. The other volunteers I have met here have been the most awesome people in world we were thrown together and became such close friend within a matter of days. I honestly will never forget all the amazing memories we made together each day.

I can’t believe I only have a few days left here 3 weeks have gone by so fast but I’m so grateful that I was able to have this amazing opportunity.

Thank you for everything.
