Nolan Mott

Nolan Mott Testimonial – Volunteer, July 2019

I honestly didn’t know exactly what to expect in one week of volunteering when I registered with AERU.  I was, however, keenly interested in working with the elephants, learning about their social interactions, communication, and special needs along with AERU’s efforts in education and promoting the well-being of elephants in captivity.  I couldn’t have underestimated the experience more or the impact it would have on me.

There are no books to read, videos to watch or stories to hear that can adequately describe my experience here.  The staff was extremely welcoming and enthusiastic in their efforts to teach and guide the volunteers.  I’ve developed a tremendous admiration for the AERU team’s (Staff, Guides, etc.) work and their dedication to these gentle giants.  I also stand in awe of the bond between the guides and the elephants.   It was incredible to witness the power that they can exude in one moment and then turn to demonstrate a gentle welcoming the next.  Each elephant truly has their own personality and it was a privilege to get to know them up close.

I would like to thank everyone at AERU for all of their hard work and dedication.  Without a doubt, this has been a truly memorable week and one that I will always cherish.
