Our resident elephant herd at Knysna Elephant Park is presently made up of ten elephants, two teenage boys and eight ladies. Matriarch Sally cares for her adopted family together with Nandi, as they are the oldest females. Thandi (Nandi’s daughter) and Keisha are two teenage girls who have helped to care for the youngest girl of the family; Thato. The boys, Shungu and Mashudu, get along well with all the ladies, but do keep them on their toes.

In 2017 we welcomed three additional girls to the herd; Amari, Shanti and Madiwa. They have since all become so close with their new family that we consider them all as one herd. This is very unique, as not many other facilities in South Africa have a group that is similar to the herd structure seen in wild elephant herds including matriarchs, mothers and daughters, allo-mothers and adolescent young males who found their feet!
